UKATA’s Sold-Out Asbestos Mock Trial Draws Law Students and Industry Leaders

UKATA proudly hosted a sold out, mock asbestos trial at Nottingham's National Justice Museum on October 28th, 2024, sponsored by DSK Environmental Ltd. Attended by industry experts, law students, and legal professionals, this engaging event provided valuable insights into asbestos related litigation.

Highlights included an engaging presentation of what to expect when a HSE inspector visits site from Emma Wilkinson of PCR Global, discussions on the legal landscape by Gordon and Jennifer Sewell of Sewell Law, an update from Liz Darlison MBE - Mesothelioma UK, and Barrister Jack McCracken overseeing the trial as judge. Attendees, acting as the jury, had the opportunity to decide the case’s outcome in this immersive experience.

Law students from the University of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent University were an integral part of the event, gaining first-hand exposure to courtroom proceedings and asbestos-related claims. The unique setup combined education with historical immersion, as attendees toured the historic Victorian courtrooms, Georgian gaol, and ancient cells adding depth to the experience.

Speakers emphasised the importance of understanding the evolving legal frameworks surrounding asbestos management, a topic of high relevance in occupational safety. The event also highlighted the challenges of prosecuting asbestos related cases, from burden of proof to expert witness testimony.

The mock trial showcased not only legal challenges but also raised awareness on how asbestos exposure continues to affect workers today. Emma Wilkinson detailed real world case examples, while Jennifer and Gordon Sewell addressed the need for ongoing regulation and training in asbestos handling.
