UKATA sponsored conference will deliver the Truth on Asbestos in November

The UK Asbestos Training Association (UKATA) is using its position as one of the sponsors of this year’s ‘Asbestos the Truth 2012’ conference taking place on Thursday 8 November in Birmingham to drive home the message on the continued dangers of asbestos and the importance of training when it comes to a material that remains the biggest cause of work related deaths in the UK.

UKATA is sponsoring the one day conference at the MacDonald Burlington Hotel together with Association member and asbestos awareness training provider Lucion Environmental; with the aim of providing up to date information on asbestos legislation, training, management and awareness.

From 9am to 5pm, the morning includes a series of presentations on asbestos use, before the event splits into two groups for the afternoon sessions. Group 1 will be given an introduction to the danger and management of asbestos; while Group 2 will receive an industry and knowledge update tailored for industry insiders and those with a duty to manage asbestos.

“These conferences are always a success and this year UKATA will be taking a stand as well as being an event sponsor,” said UKATA’s Technical and Operations Manager Terry Barker. “The event targets those who require asbestos awareness training or who have a responsibility to manage asbestos in their working role. UKATA will be delivering what for some is an inconvenient truth – that asbestos remains a big killer in the workplace and that training is essential to ensure the safety of employees and public alike when coming into contact with this deadly substance.”

Asbestos is still out there in many buildings and all workers need to be aware of what to do if they believe they risk coming into contact with a killer – those diagnosed with Mesothelioma as a result of asbestos exposure have a life expectancy of just 9-12 months and there remains no known cure.

“Despite the 4,500 plus workers who still die every year as a result of asbestos related illnesses, it remains a little known fact that asbestos is still the biggest single cause of work related deaths in the UK,” added Terry. “This is something UKATA is determined to change by challenging misconceptions and ensuring the training is robust enough to ensure the safety of workers and conferences like Asbestos the Truth are the prefect place to get the message across.”

Asbestos the Truth aims to cover everything you need to know about asbestos management in one day, including the option of complementary asbestos training. The full programme of the days events, including key speakers can be found by visiting http://www.lucion.co.uk/asbestos-the-truth-2012/ Tickets are priced from £130, (including a hot buffet lunch) and can be booked following the same link or by calling 0191 461 8999.
