UKATA to Host Asbestos Mock Trial Event at National Justice Museum

Mock Trial 2024

UKATA is proud to announce that it will host an Asbestos Mock Trial event on Monday 28th October at the National Justice Museum in Nottingham. This groundbreaking event aims to educate industry professionals about the legal intricacies of asbestos-related claims through an engaging courtroom reenactment.

The event will feature expert speakers from various fields, including legal professionals, health and safety advocates, and industry leaders, providing invaluable insights into the complexities of asbestos litigation. Attendees will benefit from a unique opportunity to observe a simulated trial, allowing for a deeper understanding of the legal processes involved.

Law students from both Nottingham Law School (Nottingham Trent University) and The School of Law at The University of Nottingham will attend the event, providing a valuable educational opportunity for future legal professionals to engage with asbestos litigation.

Kicking off the day, former HSE inspector Emma Wilkinson of PCR Global Limited will present a discussion on what to do “when an inspector calls”.

This will be followed by an update on recent asbestos prosecutions and a discussion on where we are now with mesothelioma by experienced defence solicitors, Gordon Sewell and Jennifer Sewell of Sewell Law.

After a short break, Jack McCracken, barrister at Ropewalk Chambers, Nottingham, and specialist in the industrial disease field will assume the role of Judge and preside over the Victorian Court room as delegates are sworn in as members of the jury. The case will give you a glimpse into what happens when a director is prosecuted for health and safety failings.

Witnesses will be called to give live evidence to the Court and be challenged under cross examination.

During the break for lunch, delegates will have the opportunity to join a tour of the beautiful, historic National Justice Museum which features a Georgian gaol, and ancient cells.
