Members Memorandum: UKATA Emergency Procedures

Dear Member

In response to numerous requests from members, UKATA has developed a series of presentation slides on UKATA Emergency Procedures relevant to asbestos awareness training.

It has become increasingly apparent during the annual verification process that members are referring to EM1 of the HSG210 Asbestos Essentials Task Manual. The problem is that this guidance refers specifically to the use of RPE which is not relevant to Asbestos Awareness Training.

To this end UKATA has developed the UKATA Emergency Procedure slides specific to Asbestos Awareness Training only.

UKATA acknowledges that a significant number of tradespersons would already be wearing RPE or PPE whilst carrying out tasks which may involve the accidental disturbance of ACM’s. However, the advice UKATA recommends is that if a trade operative is already wearing PPE and RPE for non-asbestos activities, it must be assumed that they have already received the appropriate training from their employer and they know how to wear, fit and use the RPE.

To introduce RPE as part of asbestos awareness training could lead to confusion in that if an operative has RPE and has received Asbestos Awareness training they could then work with it. This is absolutely not the case.

The responsibility remains with the training provider to ensure the message is absolutely clear to ALL delegates, regardless of their business that the wearing of RPE or PPE is NOT a requirement of the UKATA Asbestos Awareness Syllabus.

It is important to be aware that these slides have been provided for assistance and advisory guidance only. UKATA Training Providers should of course adapt and amend these slides to meet their specific training needs as each scenario presents its own procedures which of course must be followed. The detail presented on the attached slides is in no way exhaustive and UKATA cannot and will not accept any liability arising from an emergency occurring.

Kind Regards,

UKATA
