Over the past few years, long-standing UKATA Auditor Ab Woolass has embarked on a journey in competitive cycling to raise awareness and support for the Mavis Nye Foundation.
The Mavis Nye Foundation was created to inspire victims of mesothelioma, an asbestos related terminal Cancer. Sadly, Mavis Nye lost her battle to mesothelioma in November 2023, her remarkable journey and relentless advocacy touched the lives of many and her legacy continues as do the fundraising efforts in her memory.
Ab will continue to raise asbestos awareness and support the charity in 2024 by taking part in the following events:
The 2024 National Cross Country Championships, Saturday, 24th February 2024
The National Cross Country Championships at Weston Park, near Telford is the pinnacle of British distance running. It draws top athletes, including Olympic and world champions. Remarkably, despite only having run for 13 months, Ab is gearing up to compete alongside these elite runners.
RTTC National Hill Climb Championship, 27th October 2024
Ab is provisionally entered into the RTTC National Hill Climb Championship, taking place on Prospect Hill, Corbridge, Northumberland, the time trial is on a measured course on a public road, it’s a race against the clock, with riders starting a minute apart. They are known as the 'race of truth' because there is nowhere to hide, no one to draft behind; just a rider, their bike, a thumping heart, and a clock ticking.
Speaking of the upcoming challenges Ab Woolass said “Ray Nye and myself are very keen that support continues for the foundation ( Mavis Nye BEM BCAh Hon DR would have wanted it ) and that I carry on raising awareness to the risks and dangers to asbestos whilst I’m competing in events (I think some of the other competitors, were really fed up last year of me talking about the MNF, but my thoughts are if I can change the way one person thinks or acts, then I’ve made a difference).”
