HSE have recently released the latest annual injury and ill-heath statistics, which includes asbestos related deaths.
The latest statistics report:
- 2,526 mesothelioma deaths in 2017, with a similar number of lung cancer deaths linked to past exposures to asbestos. Mesothelioma deaths have slightly decreased compared with 2,595 mesothelioma deaths in 2016.
- 517 deaths in 2017 mentioning asbestosis on the death certificate. Asbestosis deaths have slightly increased compared with 500 asbestos deaths in 2016.
These statistics still show that there are over 5,000 asbestos-related disease deaths per year currently, including mesothelioma, lung cancer and asbestosis.
