The UK Asbestos Training Association joined Chesterfield Champions in 2016.

4th July 2016, Craig Evans – General Manager of UKATA features as Chesterfield Champion of the week:

My name is Craig Evans and I am 27 years old. I have quite a large family: parents, grandparents, 4 sisters, 3 brothers and 13 Nephews/Nieces! Not forgetting my partner and my 2 lively Bassett Hounds Daisy & Boe. I was born and bred in Chesterfield and have worked here all of my adult life.

UKATA was established in January 2008 by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). The HSE passed the responsibility for managing the list of training providers for licensed asbestos work to UKATA. During the first 5 years in operation, UKATA grew from strength to strength.

In the last 3 years, we have experienced a substantial growth and hold the eminent position in the Asbestos Industry as the leading Association in Asbestos Training. With our strong membership delivering training to over 200,000 delegates a year. UKATA is located at Markham Vale Environment Centre and currently employs 8 staff.

1.What do you like best about living in Chesterfield and why?

Chesterfield is important to me, growing up here I have seen the town develop into such a diverse place. There is so much to do in Chesterfield, from the social aspect to taking a step back and having a leisurely afternoon walk with the dogs on the canal. The opportunities in Chesterfield are endless and there is never a dull moment.

2.What are your favourite ways to spend your free time in Derbyshire?

I love visiting Bakewell, and Matlock, regularly sneaking off on a Sunday afternoon for fish and chips. Queen’s Park Sports Centre is one of the other places I spend time (burning off the chips).

3.Where is your favourite place to shop locally and why?

Ravenside Retail Park is a prime retail park for Chesterfield, it is so versatile, from fashion to DIY and plenty of places to eat. Chesterfield Town Centre and Market is another great shopping experience, with fresh produce available on the market stalls, local and high street brands/retailers and unique gifts from the Chesterfield Market Hall.

4.What is your favourite hidden gem in Chesterfield and why?

Ali Barbers on West Bars, they offer a hot towel shave service which is second to none. Also, Poolsbrook Valley Park, a great day out for the family and the dogs.
5.What are the positives about running a business here?

Networking opportunities / liaising with other local businesses. Great transport links to the motorway and our very own train station on the doorstep is always helpful too.

6.What new development in the area excites you most?

Being a resident in Markham Vale, the development of the Great Bear site is getting closer to completion and I can’t wait to see the finished result. I am looking forward to seeing the hustle and bustle of a brand new workforce and jobs for the local community.

Peak Resort is another great development that will boost the local economy by creating 1,300 jobs and will offer a new experience for local residents to enjoy.

7.What do you believe Chesterfield needs but doesn’t yet have?

An ice rink! This would be a great asset to Chesterfield.
