Asbestos and the Construction Industry

The United Kingdom Asbestos Training Association (UKATA) has announced the appointment of Terry Barker MA, PG DIP, as its new Technical and Operations Manager. A director of UKATA since its inception, Terry joins the team at Markham Vale for an initial three month period to support the team in driving forward the development of the organisation and delivering the UKATA’s strategy and vision for the future. The appointment comes ahead of UKATA seeking a permanent Managing Director and Chief Executive and news on these new appointments is expected shortly.

Terry’s name is a byword in the asbestos industry, having worked in the sector for 23 years. Together with his founding role in UKATA, Terry was also heavily involved with the Asbestos Training providers Working Group (ATPWG) with the Health and Safety Executive; making him the perfect candidate for this new role in the Association.

“The Board of Directors felt very strongly that Terry’s continued assistance in moving the business forward was of such importance that we sought to engage his professional services and we are delighted he has accepted this new position,” said Mike Smith of UKATA. “Terry is very familiar with the needs and requirements of the membership and his appointment is a necessary step in effecting organisational change. Terry’s reputation precedes him and we are sure his appointment will prove a popular choice with our members.”

In accordance with the organisation’s Articles, Terry resigned from the UKATA board in order to take on this new role. Terry is a professionally qualified Chartered Practitioner of Safety and Health (CMIOSH), an Associate Member of the Faculty of Occupational Hygiene, being CCP (Asbestos) and is a Corporate Member of the International Institute of Risk and Safety management (MIIRSM).

Commenting on his new role, UKATA Technical and Operations Manager Terry Barker said, “I am delighted to be taking on this new role for UKATA. I firmly believe in what UKATA stands for and aims to achieve for the asbestos industry. I stand for fairness and opportunity for all UKATA members, whether large or small, commercial or non-commercial training providers.

“I have been privileged to work with the existing executive and I believe my knowledge, experience and deep seated ethics can make a lasting difference. I hope to continue to work to benefit our Members and achieve all the Association’s aspirations for the future.”

UKATA is a leading authority in asbestos training in the UK, a privileged position that has only been achieved by a tremendous amount of hard work, dedication and a focus on Quality and Standards that is second to none. From a standing start of zero Members a few years ago, UKATA now has over 130 fee paying Members with many more Membership applications pending and forthcoming new legislation likely to mean the demand for Training and Consultancy services offered by Members will increase further.

Terry’s appointment is the most high profile to date in a number of key senior appointments UKATA is looking to make to better serve the needs of existing members and manage the growth of the Association. UKATA will shortly commence the due process of seeking to appointment a suitably appropriate permanent CEO.

UKATA is always keen to talk to prospective Members who are 100% committed to the highest professional standards. For further information on UKATA, visit www.ukata.org.uk
